Highlights is an exercise in material contrast.

Setting one against another to increase visual impact.

The construction is a great example of combining traditional and modern techniques to achieve an ultra contemporary aesthetic. 

The top is constructed as a torsion box, with a half checked plywood core and outer skins of poplar blockboard, covered with resawn solid curly jarrah.

This method of construction is used to engineer the wings of aircraft. It removes weight and builds in strength and rigidity.

In furniture construction it opens up many design possibilities. By allowing you to considerably increase the thickness of a table or desk top, whilst still keeping it at a practical weight.

It also allowed the legs in this piece to be attached with all the fixings neatly hidden from view.

The legs were cast in aluminium in a small local foundry. A timber pattern was made and a sand box was used as the mould.

Each leg was hand polished, fitted and fixed to the finished top. The dimensions are appropriate for a desk and also a dining table.
